Why Choose a Moissanite Engagement Ring

To the naked eye, moissanite gemstones are nearly indistinguishable from natural diamonds. With a higher refractive index than diamonds, moissanite actually shines even brighter than a diamond while costing significantly less. Like diamonds, moissanite is also incredibly hard, meaning it will retain its flawless aesthetic and sparkle for the life of the ring. Moissanite engagement rings are an affordable, ethical, and brilliant alternative to diamonds. If you want a stunning engagement with brilliant sparkle, a moissanite ring is the perfect choice.

The 4 C's of Moissanite

Moissanite colour chart

Colour

The colour scale for diamonds is a grading system which ranges from D for completely colourless to Z which indicates noticeably yellow or brown hues. The closer a diamond is to the D grade, the more valuable and desirable it is. Moissanite benefits from being naturally colourless, and therefore graded in the range between D to F. Finding a perfectly colourless diamond is extremely rare and therefore comes at a significant cost premium.

Carat

Carat is a unit of weight used to measure the size of gemstones, size being another key factor in value, though cut, colour, and clarity also matter. A round cut, 1 carat diamond would typically be around 6.5mm across, which is the same size of the moissanite gemstone found in our rings. 1 carat is a very popular size for engagement rings because it's large enough to be noticed, but modest enough that it doesn't appear ostentatious and won't be cumbersome on your finger doing day-to-day things.

Cut

The cut refers to how well the gemstone is shaped and faceted to reflect light, affecting its brilliance and sparkle. This is an important factor so that the ring glistens on your partner's finger. Moissanite is fortunate because it's a gemstone known for its exceptional fire and brightness, meaning a well-cut moissanite will sparkle brighter than a diamond. You will notice that sparkle in the photos of our rings.

Clarity

Clarity in a diamond measures the presence of internal flaws, inclusions and surface imperfections. They are rated on a scale from Flawless (FL) through to Included (I3). Imperfections naturally occur in diamonds and can affect a their transparency and brilliance. Moissanite is lab-grown, resulting in fewer imperfections and higher clarity, this allows moissanite to reflect light better, enhancing its sparkle and overall appearance.

Moissanite is Naturally Durable

Not one of the four C's, but diamonds are famously durable due to their high Mohs rating. For jewellery that’s likely to get knocked like rings, a hardness of 9 or above is recommended. While natural diamonds score 10 on the Mohs score, moissanite is very highly rated at 9.25, this makes it perfect for an engagement ring and means it will retain its flawless aesthetic and sparkle for the life of the ring.

Affordable Luxury

Our 1 carat moissanite engagement rings offer exceptional brilliance at a fraction of the cost of a diamond ring. While a high-quality 1-carat diamond will comfortably cost north of £3,000, our stunning moissanite ring is available for only £39.99, making it an incredibly affordable yet luxurious alternative. If you're searching for an affordable, but breathtaking engagement ring, moissanite is the perfect option.

The Science Behind Moissanite

Moissanite was first discovered in 1893 by the French chemist Henri Moissan while examining rock samples from a meteor crater in Arizona. Initially mistaken for diamonds, these crystals were later identified as silicon carbide (SiC). However, natural moissanite is exceedingly rare, making it impractical for widespread use in jewellery. This rarity sparked the pursuit of lab-grown alternatives, giving rise to the high-quality moissanite we know today.
